I was in the wine shop picking up a couple bottles of Rosé, trying hard not to be tempted by any other bottle since I was there just for the Rosés. Of course something caught my eye; the little iridescent fly on the Shoofly Shiraz 2010. Although I’m not in love with the name, or the iridescent fly on the bottle that grabbed my attention, I felt its effort of being a bit off the beaten label path deserved a place in my shopping basket. With a motto of “Helping deal with life’s little distractions”, the Shoofly winemaking team is led by McLaren Vale native Ben Riggs. He sources his grapes from premium grape growers and vineyards throughout Australia’s most renowned appellations, such as Barossa Valley, Heathcote and McLaren Vale.
Dark purple-garnet in colour, decadent desert-like aromas of blackberries covered in dark chocolate and vanilla swirled about in my glass. Jammy flavours of black cherry and figs abounded in the medium body. Spicy black pepper, smooth vanilla and traces of toasty oak rounded out the moderate finish. Although a simple and pleasant table wine now, it has been given a drinking window to 2020; I believe this needs a few more years in the cellar to reach its full potential.
