Red Rock Winemaker’s Blend Reserve 2010

Saturday evening my husband and I elected to have a low maintenance pizza and movie night. I fancied a bottle with big flavours to accompany the garlic loaded pesto, grilled portabellas and smoky mozzarella on my pizza, yet on the simple and easy drinking side since I would be bringing it along in my trusty glass-lined silicone bottle to the movie theatre after dinner. I selected Red Rock Winemaker’s Blend Reserve 2010 from my wine bar with the hopes it would satisfy both of my criteria. Red Rock Winery sources grapes from various vineyards located throughout California with a goal of creating “approachable elegance, lush fruit flavors, and rounded structure” in all of their wines. Winemaker Debbi Juergenson culled a selection of grapes from San Luis Obispo and Sonoma County vineyards for her Winemaker’s Blend.

Inky dark purple-red in colour, aromas of ripe cherry and damp earth swirled about in my glass. Jammy blackberry, blueberry and cherry notes mingled with sweet vanilla and traces of earthy mushrooms. Spicy black pepper, toasty oak and hints of caramel supported the lengthy finish. Smooth and easy drinking, this is a bring anywhere, crowd-pleasing bottle.
