I recall being rather excited when I happened upon this in the wine shop; I thought it a fantastic price for a 2006 estate bottled Supérieur. Château Saint Julian was purchased in 2004 by a former Parisian businessman who always dreamed of producing Bordeaux. He revived the estate and his first vintage, the 2005, has been called “tremendous”.
Dark garnet with brick around the edges in colour, aromas of fresh cherry and stony minerals mingled with sweet caramel notes. Fruity cherry and plum flavours were supported by earthy forest elements in the medium body. Spicy green pepper and spirited anise notes merged with leather and traces of oak in the harmonizing finish. Silky smooth and well balanced; this is a friendly, graceful glass fantastic on its own or with dinner.
