It was the Rangers’ game 7 of Series 1 so I knew I was in for a nail-biting night. I fancied an uncomplicated, effortless glass that I wouldn’t have to give much thought to. After perusing through my bottles, I decided to go with the Sasyr Sangiovese & Syrah 2009. Sasyr is a label of Tuscan wine company Rocca delle Macìe. Founded in 1973 by Italian TV producer Italo Zingarelli and today headed by his son Sergio, the family is heavily involved with the arts, from painting to opera, believing that wine is a work of art also. They describe the Sasyr as “Vino Donna, a wine with a feminine soul”.
Nearly opaque, dark garnet in colour, aromas of sweet violet and damp earth pushed up out of my glass. Fruity cherry and plum flavours were fortified by smooth, supple leather notes in the medium body. The brief finish displayed zippy white pepper sprinkled with hints of earthy dried thyme. Easy drinking and straightforward, this is a soft, simple glass that can be enjoyed on its own or with a meal.
