Liotro Nero d’Avola 2009

Nero d’Avola is one of my favourite grapes, and I snatch up bottles of it whenever I happen upon them. Ironically it was the delightful elephants on the label of the Liotro Nero d’Avola 2009 that caught my eye first, not the grape. Liotro is part of the Bacchanal Wine Imports family which was founded in 2002 to specialize in importing small, high quality wines from Italy. Their mission is to work with producers that concentrate on using indigenous grapes “that embody terrific character particular to their origin and regions”.

Garnet with brick around the edges, after aerating aromas of cherry blossom and forest floor fought their way through the veneer of alcohol that was still skulking about.  Summer fresh strawberry flavours intermingled amongst rich plum and velvety dried cherry elements in the chewy, full body. Soft, round tannins, spicy black pepper and lingering raisin notes elongated the finish. Fantastically rustic, this is an easy drinking, everyday glass that keeps you reaching for more.
