I’ve seen a few good reviews from the likes of Wine Enthusiast, The Wine Advocate, and one of my local wine shops for the Bodegas Montebuena Rioja 2009, so I decided to pick it up. Montebuena is produced by Bodegas Burgo Viejo which was founded by six farming families in 1987. The 500 acre estate is located on the far eastern end of Rioja and includes a “state of the art production facility”. As with Bordeaux, 2009 has been hailed as an outstanding vintage for Rioja.
Brilliant red-violet in colour, after aerating aromas of pound cake and fresh berries with a trace of alcohol lurking beneath rose from my glass. Jammy flavours of raspberry and blackberry sprinkled with subtle dried rose petal notes abounded in the nearly full body. Spicy white pepper and tobacco elements rounded out the moderate finish. Overall this is a smooth, easy drinking, everyday glass good for the table or on its own.
