For her birthday, my sister chose to by-pass all of the trendy restaurants in her town and go to a family style Italian place about 30 minutes south of her. The restaurant is part of a local, small chain that caters to the large family and offers free dinner on your birthday. The wine list was expectedly on the mundane side, but I thought it a perfect opportunity to try some bottles I wouldn’t normally pick up. To accompany our appetizers, we chose the Folonari Valpolicella 2010. Folonari was founded in 1825 by Francesco Folonari, and from the very beginning, the winery’s focus has been to “create wines accessible to everyday tables”.
Red-garnet in colour, with earthy aromas of mushroom, woodsy oak and hints of summer berries. Fruity strawberry and raspberry flavours nestled in the medium body. The finish, although rather brief, was pleasant with a woodsy cedar element. Slightly acidic, it served as a wonderful palate cleanser in between my fresh and spicy zucchini frites and earthy stuffed mushrooms. Simple and smooth, this is a pleasant, light glass for the everyday table.
