Whilst preparing deconstructed tacos of veggie-round, portabellos, brown rice and salsa verde for dinner, I found myself fancying a straightforward Napa Cab. I emerged from my wine bar rack with a bottle of Rutherford Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. Rutherford Ranch winery and vineyards are not only certified 100% organic, but also meet all State and Federal guidelines for environmentally progressive winegrowing techniques. The third-generation family run Winery just received “California Sustainable Winegrowing” certification due to “their efforts to conserve energy and water, as well as introducing natural predators to control insects and animals”. Inorder to achieve complexity, concentrated flavours and budget friendly sensibility, this particular bottling is a blend of Cabernet grapes from high-end Rutherford vineyards mixed with grapes from other select vineyards within Napa Valley.
Dark garnet with red-violet highlights, after resting in my glass for about 20 minutes aromas of raspberry and caramel swirled about and were supported by an earthy sturdiness. Lush blueberry and black current fruits were entwined with hints of warm toasty vanilla in the medium body. The finish was on the shorter side, kicking off with robust cherry and converging into zippy white peppercorn and earthy, smoky oak elements. Hearty with bright fruits, this makes for an easy drinking, crowd-pleasing bottle that can pair with everything from cheesy ravioli to spicy salsa verde to rich chocolate.
