Mollydooker The Boxer Shiraz 2008

One of the benefits of being the holiday party coordinator at my job is that I was honored with the obligation of selecting the wines for the evening [yes, due to a tight project schedule, our holiday party occurred way past the actual holidays]. Since I knew everyone was going to be ordering cowboy steaks [as per usual, I am the only vegetarian amongst the entire office and their spouses], I poured over Angelo’s 677 Prime‘s wine list with an eye out for a couple of big, bold bottles.  My first selection was Mollydooker The Boxer Shiraz 2008. “Mollydooker” is Australian for left hander, as both Sarah and Sparky Marquis, the winery’s owners are left-handed.  Their mission statement for all of their wines is “We make wines which make people go WOW, through commitment to excellence and attention to detail.” In 2006 the Wine Advocate chose The Boxer as the “Best Value Red Wine in the World”, a pretty hefty title, and since then, accolades have been piling up on all of their wines.

Aromas of jammy fruits and chocolate merged together and rose from the deep dark crimson colour in my glass. The full body swelled with soft fruit pie flavours of blueberry, raspberry and cherry. Spicy cinnamon announced the lengthy finish, while rich chocolate and cedar elements lingered sweetly. Its velvety exuberance will oblige you to finish the bottle rather swiftly.
