Happily, one of my friends at work is a fellow fan of Nero d’Avola, and alerted me to the fact that I needed to pick up a bottle of Corbelló Nero d’Avola 2009. It took me a bit of time to get it, as it unfortunately wasn’t on the shelf of the 2 wine shops I tend to frequent most often.
Dark garnet in colour, there was a bit of an alcohol smell, so I employed my trusty aerator and re-poured my glass . Previously hidden aromas of raspberry and an oaky woodsiness were awakened in my glass. Tart cherries rode on the surface of rich raisin and plum flavours in the medium body. Hints of smoke laced about black pepper and earthy notes in the lengthy finish. The cilantro and sharp cheddar in my quinoa cakes highlighted the zingy contrast between bright acidity and deep earthiness; while my friend says that he always pairs it with one of his wife’s dishes that has abundant red pepper flakes to put the spicy finish in the spotlight. A smooth, companionable bottle made more enjoyable by its fantastic wallet friendly price.
