“A nice blend of prediction and surprise seem to be at the heart of the best art.”
One of my Christmas gifts from my delightful and charming husband was a Riedel Syrah glass and decanter set. Not only are Riedel glasses known to be the best wine glasses made, Claus Riedel was the very first person to design glasses according to the character of the wine. They have a glass set for every grape, need and budget, ranging from their functional and budget friendly “Bar set”, to their super high-end “Sommelier” series. For my Vinum Syrah set, [which can be used on a few other varietals such as Amarone, Blaufränkisch, Grenache, Malbec and Pinotage] the glass was specifically shaped to highlight the tannins and to provide balance to the intense flavours found in these particular wines. The roomy bowl is shaped to enhance rich bouquets, whilst the narrow rim directs the flow of wine to the center of the tongue, which emphasizes the fruit flavours and guides the tannins to the back of the palate for a smooth finish.
As I tend to be a hopeful skeptic, I decided to experiment to see just how fantastic these glasses really are. I thought the best wine to start with would be a simple, budget friendly Shiraz [especially since it was already sitting in my wine bar rack]. I popped open the Cupcake Vineyards Shiraz 2009 and proceeded to pour it into my trusty rounded glass and then into my new Riedel Syrah glass. The difference in taste between the two was absolutely massive. The Riedel unquestionably emphasized the jammy fruitiness and somehow directed the tannins to the back and sides of my tongue, highlighting and adding silkiness to the finish. I am a forever a devoted Riedel fan.
Red-violet in colour, a curious blend of cherry and flint aromas sprung from my Riedel Syrah glass. The medium body was packed with tart cherry and juicy blackberry flavours. Spicy black pepper and velvety dark chocolate notes abounded in the lengthy finish. Smooth, fruity and spicy, this is an easy drinking crowd pleaser of a bottle.
