Folie à Deux Ménage à Trois Red 2009

As a result of my analytical nature and my new found love of aerators, I decided to pick up a bottle of Folie à Deux Ménage à Trois Red 2009. I get this quite regularly by the glass at my local pub as it really is the best wine they offer. I wanted to see just how much of a contrast the aerator provides in taste with a wine that I’m not only familiar with, but I believe could use some assistance with its burning alcohol issues and generic fruit flavours. I was absolutely thrilled with the outcome, and am considering sneaking my aerator in next time I go!
Even after employing my fun aerator, there was still a bit of an alcohol smell, however with a little effort, I found yummy aromas of strawberry shortcake hiding underneath. Dark garnet in colour, the nearly full body was packed with jammy, concentrated flavours of raspberry and blackberry that transformed each sip into a bite of juicy pie. The medium finish kicked off with spicy green peppercorn and winded down with vanilla and toasted oak notes. A compressed dose of syrupy fruit left a slight aftertaste, although discernable tannins contributed an amount of structure and dryness that left a largely agreeable impression. Although simple, it’s a good fruity crowd pleaser in its price point. Bright and soft, it’s a California version of an everyday Italian table wine.
